Burnley energy firm’s office redevelopment is powered by No Limits
Thursday 29th July
A Burnley-based energy efficiency company is proving there are No Limits to what can be achieved, after redeveloping their old office building into a model of sustainability.
Ensign Energy Limited was set up as a “not-for-profit” company in 2008 to offer audit and energy efficiency advice to home owners, public bodies, schools and commercial customers across the North West. A key part of their work is around installing cutting edge micro-generation technologies, like wind turbines or solar panels.
The company’s office dates back to the 1930s and is located in the Weavers Triangle development area of Burnley, so Ensign decided to renovate the building to showcase new green technology, turning it into a living showroom. And they’re using it to prove that old buildings can be successfully upgraded with environmentally friendly methods.
Operations Director Ged Ennis explained that Ensign wanted to show their commitment to Burnley’s redevelopment. He said: “Not only did we want to be part of the Weavers Triangle we also wanted a building that makes a statement.”
Ensign turned to No Limits Finance4Growth for support to help with the redevelopment. Finance4Growth offers grant funding to assist the growth and development of established businesses in the local area. Businesses can claim up to a maximum of £40,000 or 50% of eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Work supported by No Limits included the replacement of all windows and external doors, damp proofing, dry rot treatment, rendering external walls, insulation, rewiring, lighting that adjusts with the daylight, new signage and the installation of photovoltaic panels (commonly known as solar panels).
The panels generate electricity for the company’s use and recent changes in the law mean Ensign can sell any surplus power to the National Grid.
The work will support Ensign’s growth plan, which includes creating 10 new jobs over the next two years.
Ged said: “The new building reflects well on our company, and it is energy efficient. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the grant from Finance4Growth.”
Julie Hynes, Burnley’s No Limits Finance4Growth case officer, said: “This grant has helped to support a successful, cutting-edge company, and at the same time invest in a key piece of Burnley’s regeneration. It’s an example of how our support has benefits across the area.”
