Help for companies to get into renewable energy

Wednesday 19th May

Fifteen businesses in Pennine Lancashire will benefit from a new scheme, which aims to get them working in the growing green energy sector.

The 15 businesses, from across Pennine Lancashire, will be given the skills and training they need to compete for and win contracts in the microgeneration and renewable energy sectors. These skills are increasingly important in new housing schemes and during refurbishments, as well as on commercial and industrial projects in the North West.

No Limits Constructing the Future, part of Regenerate Pennine Lancashire, is working with Envirolink to deliver the scheme, one of the first of its kind in the country.

The businesses will include electricians, plumbers and air conditioning specialists, who can develop into installing home wind turbines, solar water heating, ground pumps and other home renewable energy technologies.

Regenerate employed the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce to identify and map the skill and accreditation requirements of construction supply chain companies in the sub-region. Interested companies were assessed to select businesses that had the most to gain from and offer to the programme.

The supply chain mapping work highlighted a need for different types of renewable energy technology training. The result is that companies can work through different steps along a route to accreditation. It also found a requirement for accreditation against the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) itself, where companies already had the relevant skills and training.

Regenerate Pennine Lancashire’s Constructing the Future project and Envirolink Northwest are jointly funding the programme, providing technical as well as financial support towards training and accreditation for the identified businesses.
