No Limits to Success through Innovation: Doris Systems Global Ltd (Pendle)

Doris Systems Global grew out of an invention by Ray Britner. His experience in blast cleaning led him to devise an improved grit blasting gun that uses far less energy and increases productivity. The gun uses recycled crushed glass, which is more environmentally friendly than other systems.

Eureka helped Ray make sure the design was strongly protected by a UK patent, assisting the company to commission a patent attorney, and contributing to the cost.

It has sold well, and, with growing export opportunities, the company will be investing to increase production capacity.

In 2009, Doris Global Systems won a North West Business Environmental Award, against stiff competition.

No Limits Business Champion: Traditional and Modern (Darwen)

By his own admission, Phil Rothwell was on the scrap heap before contacting No Limits. Depression following the death of his father left him unemployed and on long term sick from 2002 until 2008.

The initial spark to Phil getting back on his feet was meeting the woman who is now his wife.

With help from Darwen job centre he tapped in to No Limits and started his own business in Burnley. He recently moved to larger premises in Lower Darwen.

And he is now a No Limits business champion, using his experience to inspire others to start up for themselves.

No Limits 1000th Start: Bunches (Burnley)

After 14 years working in a florist’s shop, Fran Driver had a burning ambition to start her own business.

“I thought I could do a better job,” she says. And she decided to go with a simpler offer, concentrating on bunches of flowers, though she’s happy to wrap just one if that’s what the customer wants.

While she was thinking about her own shop, she heard a No Limits radio advert. No Limits provided support for writing her business plan. Fran attended the Get Set training workshops and received a £2000 grant to help her start up.

“It’s not easy being your own boss but it feels great,” says Fran, who admits that the early weeks when business was quiet were “a bit soul destroying”.

She faced that by getting out and about, leafleting local homes and even knocking on doors to introduce herself. It worked, and business is going well with plans to recruit a delivery driver well underway.

Fran’s advice to new businesses is:

“Keep at it and don’t be disheartened.”
