No Limits when reading matters
Monday 26th November
A host of first team players from Blackburn Rovers have helped launch a reading initiative for the town's pupils.
Robbie Savage, Morten Gamst Pedersen, Matt Derbyshire, Jason Brown, Steven Reid and Ryan Nelsen all took turns to read a series of short poems to excited pupils from Longshaw Junior School.
The day was organised by Blackburn Rovers Community Trust as part of the No Limits Shooting Stars project, a project aimed at inspiring young people to become more enterprising. It is one of a range of initiatives that will be taking place across Pennine Lancashire involving the local professional football clubs and other identified partners.
'Rovers Reads' is based around an interactive DVD showcasing first team players talking about their love of reading in a bid to inspire young fans to read more and boost their prospects.
Head of Community Affairs at Blackburn Rovers, Gill Kinloch, said: "This is a great example of the use of the medium of football as a means to inspire learning and increase levels of educational attainment: a unique opportunity to engage young people in a positive way to ultimately open up new avenues of life chances."
Steve Hoyle, director of No Limits, said: "Today's footballers have a lot of influence over younger generations, and it's pleasing to see them put it to such positive use with schemes such as these.
"No Limits Shooting Stars is an important project to us. We're all about developing potential business in Pennine Lancashire, and it's never too early to start preparing tomorrow's generation of entrepreneurs."
