Students take over phone company
Friday 18th December
Students from Nelson took over a local company for the day, as they got practical experience of business. And they proved their skills by demonstrating prize winning ideas.
The students, from Nelson & Colne College, were at Daisy Communications in Nelson, planning how to market and sell a new mobile phone. The event was run by In 2 Enterprise, a youth enterprise programme delivered by No Limits.
Kate Mayers from No Limits In 2 Enterprise, said: “The students learned about how Daisy Communications works. Then they decided who did what in their team and picked a phone to sell.
“They had to consider their skills and abilities when they put together their team. And they had to understand customer needs when they put together their plan. These are key business skills.”
Daisy CEO Mat Riley was brought up and still lives in Pendle and he is extremely happy to be able to give something back to the community which he calls home. He sees the support that No Limits offers young business start-ups as a great step onto the entrepreneurial ladder:
“I think it’s fantastic that there is support and advice out there for anyone that has a vision but doesn’t know how to see it through. I didn’t benefit from that kind of mentorship when I was younger and would encourage anyone dreaming of starting their own business to grab the opportunity with both hands.”
The students developed a package around a new mobile phone set to be marketed by Daisy, including a comprehensive financial plan, marketing campaign, sales strategy and operations development.
At the end of the day, all students presented their ideas to a panel of experts, and Nelson & Colne College’s plan was judged to be the best.
