I wanted to be able to run a company the way that I wanted to and put the knowledge that I had gained over the years to good use.

The day Britain officially went into recession may not sound like an ideal time to start a business, but Alison Hill’s determination and enthusiasm have ensured that the Uno Coffee Company has developed even in the difficult economic climate. And help from two No Limits has supported the business.

Why did you want to start your own business?

It was always in the back of my mind, I wanted to be able to run a company the way that I wanted to and put the knowledge that I had gained over the years, both in business and within the industry itself, to good use.

What was the deciding factor for you?

I had been working within my previous job role for a while and was becoming tired of it and was quite unhappy. So I wanted to strike out on my own and make something of myself.

How did you get the business off the ground?

I enlisted help from Pennine Enterprise as well as No Limits. They provided me with all the information that I needed, although to be honest, as I was already working as a consultant within the coffee industry, I had quite a broad knowledge myself and some useful contacts. I therefore found the process very easy.

Best bits about working for yourself?

It has given me freedom, both in the work place where I can make my own decisions and not have to answer to anyone, and in terms of the hours that I work. I have a young child and therefore if I need to take time off, I can.

What have been the biggest challenges so far?

Money. I have struggled to make sufficient profits as coffee is a luxury good and so does not sell well in a recession. Any that I have made I have put back into the business because I want it to grow and be successful, therefore that does not leave much for me.

What would you have done differently if you could go back?

Nothing, I am very happy with the way things have turned out and the decisions I made along the way.

How does it feel to be your own boss?

Great! I love it!

Finally, a piece of advice for those thinking about starting up?

If you don’t know, ask! There are so many people as well as businesses out there that are willing to help you and have such good advice; it is definitely worth listening to it.
