Success stories
Alison Rogerson and Mandy Monk
We had the ideas, but they helped with how those ideas could work as a business.
Milly and Miles were created by Alison Rogerson and Mandy Monk, who between them have decades of experience in working with children. The two dolls come with a storybook introducing the characters and set of activity cards, resources and a DVD to support teaching children positive behaviour- like sharing and turn taking.
But to develop Milly and Miles from an idea to a successful business, Alison and Mandy needed some support. Someone who’d already been helped by No Limits suggested that we could help.
Why did you want to start your own business?
It was a new challenge, but also an extension of what we already did working in the child care sector.
What was the deciding factor for you?
We saw a gap in the market. We thought that this was something that would help professionals.
How did you get the business off the ground?
We already had several contacts expressing interest, so we knew there was an open door.
But we got really good advice, especially about things we wouldn’t have thought about. For example, Eureka helped with trademarking. The Chamber helped with getting costs down and shipping arrangements. Get Set helped us with the business plan.
Best bits about working for yourself?
The rewards- it’s time consuming hard work but you have the reward of seeing your ideas and designs become real.
What have been the biggest challenges so far?
Cash flow at the start up stage. It’s a constant struggle, with two steps forward and three back! Though it’s easing now. There were hidden costs that we hadn’t considered, like trademarking.
What would you have done differently if you could go back?
We’d have done it earlier!
How does it feel to be your own boss?
Fantastic- it’s really rewarding.
Finally, a piece of advice for those thinking about starting up?
Get advice. There’s support out there. Don’t think you know it all. Get advice and save time, money and stress.
