Success stories
Dominic Maringo
I wanted to carry on plastering but felt like I needed a new challenge. It was a massive decision but one I felt ready to make.
Dominic Maringo, 53, from Accrington, established his business, D Maringo Plastering, in 2008.
He was awarded moneys by No Limits Constructing the Future to help with training and to gain extra qualifications.
He has recently achieved CHAS accreditation, one of only a few sole trader businessed to do so.
CHAS - the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme – is an industry recognised qualification ensuring compliance with strict health and safety standards.
Why did you want to start your own business?
I’d worked for a local Council for almost twelve years. I wanted to carry on plastering but felt like I needed a new challenge. It was a massive decision but one I felt ready to make.
What was the deciding factor for you?
I was in a building merchants and saw an advert for No Limits. I was really interested in what it had to say, so I made enquiries. When I saw the options open to me and had guidance in those initial stages that was so helpful, I thought, why not, let’s give it a go.
How did you get the business off the ground?
No Limits were a fantastic help in getting things off the ground. I’ve done so many different courses from an asbestos awareness course to emergency first aid, to the CHAS accreditation. I was also put in touch with a Guardian Angel – the No Limits mentor programme - whose given me so much guidance and advice, taken me to the breakfast clubs and helped me a lot with contacts and advice.
I was also awarded a small grant to buy my van, which I’ve also had branded up with my business name.
Best bits about working for yourself?
The main thing is the freedom to be able to do my own thing. It’s on my own terms, I’m the boss!
What have been the biggest challenges so far?
I’d say the biggest challenge is finding work. With the way the economy has been recently, it’s not been easy.
Another challenge has been getting the word out that I’m here and available. I’m good at what I do and I do a good job so people are usually happy to recommend me to their friends.
What would you have done differently if you could go back?
I’ve recently completed a plumbing course at Burnley College, which No Limits helped me with. It’s important to be multi-skilled nowadays. I can now do things like changing a radiator or a bath and can incorporate that work into my business. I maybe would have done that sooner but, to be honest, with the help I’ve received I’m pretty happy with how it’s all gone so far.
How does it feel to be your own boss?
It’s great. There’s a pressure that comes with it, of course, but it’s an exciting challenge and one i’m grasping with both hands.
Finally, a piece of advice for those thinking about starting up?
Simple. Register with No Limits and see how they can help you. I couldn’t have done this without them. If you’re interested in starting your own business, their help might just make the difference
